Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, Feb 24 (NationPress) The Bihar Assembly was engulfed in significant turmoil on Tuesday due to the police's lathi charge against Chowkidars and Dafadars.
Members of the Opposition accused the Nitish Kumar administration of stifling legitimate protests, leading to intense confrontations between the Treasury Benches and the Opposition.
RJD MLA Kumar Sarvjeet claimed that the Bihar government is operating through intimidation.
“A regime reliant on violence will not endure in Bihar,” he asserted, prompting loud protests from Opposition members.
Protesters in the Assembly brandished placards and chanted phrases like “Nitish government, regain your sanity” and “Down with the Nitish government.”
In the midst of the chaos, Nitish Kumar rose angrily and directly addressed RJD MLA Bhai Virendra.
“Cease your nonsense. This government will not collapse. What are your numbers? Observe ours — we are 202,” Nitish Kumar retorted.
Reflecting on his previous partnership with the RJD, the Chief Minister remarked, “I was allied with you for three years, but your constant disruptions led me to depart.”
“Under your governance, citizens were scared to venture out after dark. Presently, Bihar is advancing, and all is well,” he insisted.
Nitish Kumar also urged the Speaker to remove members who disrupt the House's proceedings.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary defended the government's response, asserting that the protest had exceeded acceptable boundaries.
“If the government opposed the protest, it would have intervened from the outset. No organization possesses the right to disrupt public order or damage state property,” he stated.
He characterized the government's actions regarding Chowkidar and Dafadar service conditions as groundbreaking and accused the Opposition of feigning concern.
Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav expressed that the government is open to discussions with the Chowkidar-Dafadar organization and will evaluate their requests.
Meanwhile, LJP (Ram Vilas) state president and MLA Raju Tiwari mentioned that his party had previously brought this matter to the Chief Minister's attention and would demand accountability if any misconduct occurred during the lathi charge.
Speaking to the media following the session, Kumar Sarvjeet reiterated the legitimacy of the Chowkidars and Dafadars' demands.
“Most of them belong to the Dalit community. The government is anti-Dalit. We denounce the lathi charge and insist their issues be addressed without delay,” he declared.
