Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, Feb 10 (NationPress) The Bihar Assembly experienced significant turmoil on Tuesday as Opposition parties raised their voices against the alarming rise in rape incidents throughout the state, coinciding with the ongoing Budget Session.
Even before the proceedings of the House commenced, Opposition MLAs were actively protesting outside the Assembly, claiming that there has been a total collapse of law and order in Bihar.
Members of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) were spotted shouting slogans at the entrance of the Assembly, displaying placards and accusing the Bihar government of failing to protect women’s safety.
The protesters chanted slogans asserting that daughters are not safe in Bihar and held the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led government accountable for the deteriorating law and order situation.
Once the House convened, Opposition MLAs rushed into the Well of the Assembly, vocally protesting against the government.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, along with both Deputy Chief Ministers and several Cabinet ministers, was present during this uproar.
The Opposition demanded explanations regarding the death of a NEET student, allegedly following a rape incident in a Patna girls' hostel, and the sexual assault and murder of a minor girl in Darbhanga.
Amidst the bedlam, Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar instructed marshals to remove posters from the House and repeatedly urged members to restore order.
Despite the Speaker’s requests, protests persisted, ultimately leading to the Opposition MLAs staging a walkout.
They later returned to their seats after the Speaker intervened.
In response to the protests and walkout, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary criticized the Opposition for choosing disruption over constructive dialogue.
He accused them of being confused and unwilling to consider the government's response.
RJD MLA Bhai Virendra described the issue as extremely serious and emphasized that the government must take full responsibility in addressing crimes against women.
Before the House convened, Congress MLAs executed a dramatic protest.
They entered the Assembly grounds carrying a mannequin adorned with bangles, symbolically blaming the government for its failure to safeguard women.
Congress legislators asserted that despite their consistent concerns about law and order and specific incidents such as the NEET student's suspicious death, the government was suppressing these issues.
Congress MLAs contended that the Bihar government had entirely failed to control crime and warned that their protests would persist until justice is served to the victims.
As part of their protest, they presented bangles to the government as a symbolic gesture.
Opposition MLAs also called for the imposition of President’s Rule in Bihar, citing the worsening law and order situation.
MLAs supporting Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Tejashwi Yadav demanded an apology from Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to the women of Bihar and also sought his resignation.
Tensions escalated further when Opposition MLAs chanted slogans against the Chief Minister upon his arrival at the Assembly.
Congress MLA Abhishek Ranjan from Chanpatia carried an effigy of the Bihar government, displaying a list of recent criminal incidents and adorned with bangles.
A placard on the effigy read: “We apologize, we are unable to provide justice to the daughters of Bihar.”
Meanwhile, reacting to the verbal exchange between Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and former Chief Minister Rabri Devi in the Legislative Council on Monday, JD(U) leader and former minister Shyam Rajak downplayed the incident on Tuesday, describing it as a familial matter.
He added that while crimes do occur, the government is taking swift action in such cases.
