Lebanese Parliament Speaker Announces Presidential Election Session

Beirut, Nov 28 (NationPress) The Lebanese Parliament Speaker, Nabih Berri, revealed on Thursday that he has summoned the parliament to assemble for an electoral session to choose a president for the nation.
"I promised myself that right after the ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel, I would establish a date for a session to elect a president for the republic, so I am announcing now that a session will be arranged for January 9, 2025," Berri stated at the onset of a legislative session.
A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah came into effect early Wednesday. Following this ceasefire, a cautious tranquility settled over the border regions of southern Lebanon. Yet, the Israeli Defense Forces executed a "warning" strike in southern Lebanon on Thursday morning. While the Israeli side reported that the strikes did not result in any casualties, Lebanese sources informed Xinhua that two individuals were injured in the Israeli drone strike.
The political discord in Lebanon has led to an unoccupied presidential position since the conclusion of former President Michel Aoun's term on October 31, 2022. The parliament has not succeeded in electing a president for the country across 12 electoral sessions, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
A caretaker government has been overseeing the country amidst this presidential void.
