Beirut, Feb 10 (NationPress) The Lebanese army has declared the initiation of retaliatory strikes in reaction to artillery fire originating from Syria.

In a message shared on the social media platform X, the army reported ongoing shelling in Lebanese border areas on Sunday and confirmed that its units are actively responding as necessary, according to the Xinhua news agency.

Heightened security protocols are being enforced along the border, which include the establishment of surveillance points, patrols, and temporary checkpoints, as outlined in the statement.

The army underscored its commitment to closely monitoring the situation and taking suitable actions as required.

On Saturday, the Lebanese army's Guidance Directorate revealed that military units had been positioned along the northern and eastern borders to counter fire from Syrian territory.

Additionally, the National News Agency (NNA) reported on Sunday that rockets fired from Syria struck multiple villages in eastern Lebanon, and two Syrian drones were intercepted over the border region.

Recent clashes involving Lebanese clans and armed groups near Hermel, adjacent to the Lebanese-Syrian border, have resulted in casualties in recent days, according to the NNA.

Previously, the Lebanese army stated that it had instructed troops stationed along the Syrian border to retaliate against fire emanating from Syrian territory.

The army, in its communication, noted that it acted on directives from Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, who ordered military units along the northern and eastern borders to respond to sources of fire targeting Lebanese regions.

The statement further revealed that units commenced retaliation with appropriate weaponry following recent clashes that resulted in shelling and attacks on various Lebanese areas.
