Kabul, March 4 (NationPress) Afghan authorities have uncovered a significant cache of illicit drugs and arrested two suspected traffickers in the northern region of Afghanistan's Takhar province on Monday evening, according to a local official's statement on Tuesday.
According to Mohammad Akbar Haqqani, the provincial police spokesperson, "Police have found a total of 6,299 kg of illicit opium hidden by smugglers inside a gas tanker in the Khatayan area of Taluqan, the provincial capital."
The vehicle was reportedly traveling from Badakhshan, a neighboring province of Takhar, with Haqqani noting that two suspects have been arrested in connection with this incident.
The Afghan interim government has banned poppy cultivation and the production and trafficking of drugs, pledging to tackle the drug issue until Afghanistan, historically known for its poppy farming, becomes a drug-free nation.
In a separate operation, counter-narcotics police seized a large amount of illegal substances, including 15 kg of heroin, and arrested 12 individuals in connection with drug-related activities in southern Kandahar province, as reported by provincial police spokesman Mullah Assadullah Jamshid on Tuesday.
The confiscated items include 15 kg of heroin, 689 kg of hashish, along with equipment used in heroin production and hundreds of intoxicating tablets. This was achieved during a series of operations conducted over the last two days, the official stated.
