Sydney, Sep 18 (NationPress) Australian health officials have raised a measles alert for Sydney Airport after confirming a case of a traveler who was infectious during their journey.
The Department of Health in New South Wales (NSW) announced the alert late Wednesday (local time), stating that the individual recently traveled from Western Australia (WA), where a measles outbreak is currently ongoing, and visited various locations in northern NSW while being infectious.
Passengers and crew aboard Virgin Australia flight VA572, which traveled from Perth to Sydney on September 12, as well as those on flight VA505 from Sydney to Gold Coast Airport the same day, are urged to remain vigilant for any symptoms, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Moreover, anyone present in T2 at Sydney Airport between 6:30 a.m. and 7 a.m. on September 12, or in the main baggage and arrival area at Gold Coast Airport from 8:30 to 9:20 a.m., should also monitor for symptoms.
The confirmed case visited the emergency department at Tweed Valley Hospital, located 660 km northeast of Sydney, near the NSW-Queensland border, on September 15.
Valerie Delpech, Director of North Coast Population and Public Health in NSW, advised anyone who may have been in contact with the infected individual at these locations to watch for symptoms such as fever, sore eyes, and cough, which can be followed by a rash spreading from the face to the body.
She emphasized that symptoms may take up to 18 days to manifest, and it is crucial for anyone developing symptoms to contact their doctor or emergency department ahead of time to avoid waiting in crowded areas.
