Washington, April 8 (NationPress) Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has landed in Washington to assess the extensive scope of India-US relations and enhance collaboration in pivotal sectors such as trade, defence, and technology.
Misri's arrival in the United States occurred late on Tuesday (local time) for a three-day engagement, where he was greeted by Indian Ambassador to the US Vinay Mohan Kwatra.
Kwatra shared his welcome on X, stating, "I welcomed Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri to Washington, DC. This visit presents a chance to review the comprehensive nature of the India–US partnership with our American counterparts and to further discussions on essential aspects of our bilateral agenda, including trade, defence, technology, and to exchange views on regional and global issues."
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) indicated that this visit aims to evaluate the India-US relationship.
According to a statement from the MEA, "This visit will serve to assess the entire spectrum of India-US bilateral relations and propel ongoing cooperation across significant domains."
During his stay, the Foreign Secretary is set to engage in discussions with senior officials from the US Administration on a myriad of topics, including trade, defence, science and technology, as well as regional and global matters of shared interest.
This visit follows the trip of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to Washington in February and aligns with the ongoing high-level exchanges between both nations, as reported by the MEA.
Post his visit in February, EAM Jaishankar remarked on the apparent "strong momentum" in the escalating engagement between New Delhi and Washington.
During the EAM's visit from February 2-4, he participated in the Critical Minerals Ministerial convened by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
He expressed gratitude for the hospitality received, stating, "Concluded a productive and positive visit to the US. I thank Secretary Rubio for his warm welcome."
Jaishankar also highlighted that the historic India-US trade agreement is nearing completion, ushering in a new era in bilateral relations with vast opportunities ahead. The cooperation on critical minerals is also progressing swiftly. He anticipates discussions on strategic issues, defence, and energy in the near future, noting a strong momentum is evident.
During this important visit, the External Affairs Minister engaged with senior officials from the US administration.
This included separate meetings with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, where he conducted extensive discussions on the India-US strategic and economic partnership.
In his discussions with Rubio, Jaishankar emphasized that multiple facets of the India-US Strategic Partnership were covered, including trade, energy, nuclear, defence, critical minerals, and technology.
He noted that both parties agreed to expedite follow-up engagements, stating, "We concurred on the early meetings of various mechanisms to advance our mutual interests."
