Moscow, March 17 (NationPress) Since the stroke of midnight on Tuesday, more than 20 drones have been successfully intercepted and destroyed over Moscow, according to reports from the Russian news agency TASS.
In a span of just three days, over 180 drones have been brought down, marking this as the most significant surge of Ukrainian drone assaults on the Russian capital in 2023. This was stated by Moscow's Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin.
No casualties or damage to infrastructure have been reported, as highlighted by the Xinhua news agency.
On March 16, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that its air defense units shot down 145 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones during the night, many of which were aimed at the Moscow region.
From 11 p.m. on Sunday to 8 a.m. on Monday (2000 GMT Sunday to 0500 GMT Monday), a total of 53 drones were intercepted in the Moscow area, including 46 that were heading directly towards the capital. Additionally, 38 drones were taken down over the Bryansk border region.
Mayor Sobyanin indicated that in the last two days, air defense forces had neutralized approximately 250 Ukrainian drones that were either approaching the city or targeting its secondary defense line.
During this timeframe, flight restrictions were implemented and then lifted at various Moscow airports, according to the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency.
On Sunday, Russia reported having shot down 605 drones, along with 12 US-made HIMARS rockets, two Neptune long-range missiles, and four guided aerial bombs launched by Ukrainian forces.
In parallel, Russian military operations targeted energy and transportation infrastructure utilized by Ukrainian forces, as well as sites involved in the training and deployment of long-range drones and temporary locations of Ukrainian troops and foreign mercenaries, as reported by the Russian Defence Ministry.
Earlier that same day, Mayor Sobyanin shared on social media that Russian air defense systems had intercepted 28 Ukrainian drones heading towards Moscow, according to Xinhua.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on Saturday that Russia had launched around 430 drones and several ballistic missiles against Ukraine, emphasizing the crucial need for effective air defense systems as a "daily necessity" for the nation.
He called for expedited agreements on missile supplies and urged the production of air defense missiles.
