Lilongwe, Oct 6 (NationPress) The newly inaugurated President of Malawi, Peter Mutharika, has disclosed a partial list of his Cabinet members.

Following his victory in the presidential elections held on September 16, Mutharika assumed office on Saturday and appointed Enock Chihana from the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) party as the second Vice President on Sunday. His election running mate, Jane Ansah, has taken on the role of first Vice President, according to a report by Xinhua News Agency.

Chihana, whose party allied with Mutharika's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to form the Blue Alliance during the elections, has marked a historic milestone as he becomes the second Malawian to hold the position of second Vice President, following in the footsteps of his father, Chakufwa Chihana, who was the second Vice President from 1994 to 1996 and again from 2003 to 2004 under President Bakili Muluzi.

According to the Malawian constitution, the president is empowered to appoint a second Vice President; however, aside from Bakili Muluzi and Peter Mutharika, no other President has made such an appointment.

In addition, Mutharika has appointed seasoned DPP member George Chaponda to serve as the Foreign Minister, while Joseph Mwanamvekha takes on the role of Minister of Finance, Economic Planning, and Development.

Both Chaponda and Mwanamvekha previously held these ministerial roles during Mutharika's first term from 2014 to 2020.

Former Deputy Commander of Defense George Jaffu has been designated as the Chief of the Malawi Defence Force, and retired Secretary for Information Justin Saidi has been appointed as Chief Secretary, with Stuart Ligomeka, a former Secretary for Local Government, serving as his deputy.

The new President has also appointed DPP Vice President for the Central Region Alfred Gangata to a newly created ministerial position as Minister of State.

Kiswell Dakamau, who has held various senior positions including Secretary for Education and Deputy Director for Local Government, is now the Director of State Residences, another new portfolio.

Lastly, the Malawian leader has appointed Police Commissioner Richard Luhanga as the Inspector General of Police.
