Nairobi, April 20 (NationPress) In a heartbreaking event, a 14-year-old girl residing on the fringes of the Kenyan capital was abducted and killed by a roaming lion, according to wildlife officials on Sunday.

The child was taken from a residential area on a ranch adjacent to Nairobi National Park, located merely 10km from the city center, which hosts wildlife such as lions, buffalos, giraffes, leopards, and cheetahs, as reported by the BBC, citing the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).

As per KWS, an alarm was triggered by another teenager, prompting rangers to trace the lion's tracks to the nearby Mbagathi River, where they discovered the remains of the primary school girl.

While the lion has not yet been located, KWS stated that it had established a trap and dispatched search teams to pursue the dangerous animal.

Enhanced security protocols have been implemented to prevent any further incidents, they added.

Nairobi National Park is enclosed on three sides to deter animals from entering the city, yet it remains open on its southern flank to facilitate animal migration.

Although conflicts between lions and humans are frequent in Kenya, particularly over livestock, fatalities are relatively rare.

Last year, a lion captured a Rottweiler dog from another residence near Nairobi National Park, as documented by CCTV footage, the BBC reported.

KWS also mentioned that a 54-year-old man was killed by an elephant on Saturday in central Nyeri County, approximately 130km north of Nairobi. The elephant, while grazing in a forest, attacked the man, resulting in severe chest injuries, fractured ribs, and internal damage. He was transported to a local hospital, where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
