Kolkata, March 29 (NationPress) In the wake of the catastrophic earthquake that struck Myanmar, claiming the lives of over 1,000 individuals, India's National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been placed on high alert. Presently in Kolkata to oversee the response efforts, IPS Piyush Anand, the Director General (DG) of NDRF, has confirmed that the teams are poised to assist Myanmar in managing the disaster.
While addressing the press, DG Piyush Anand remarked, "We are all aware of the devastating earthquake of significant magnitude that has impacted Myanmar, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promptly pledged that India stands ready to assist."
He further noted, "We have already dispatched material aid, and additional preparations are underway to provide further support."
"I will emphasize that our teams are on standby; we will depart from here and strive to offer more assistance to help mitigate the effects of this disaster and save lives. The NDRF is dedicated to supporting Myanmar in recovering from the earthquake's aftermath," Anand stated.
"Currently, we have mobilized our entire resources and dispatched an 80-member team. Whenever a team is sent, we act according to the requests made by the government. Prime Minister Modi has reaffirmed India's commitment to extend full support to Myanmar. We await the specific requests from the Myanmar government, and we stand ready to provide any necessary assistance," he concluded.
In related developments, Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar shared images of the NDRF team en route to Myanmar under the hashtag 'Operation Brahma', announcing, "An 80-member strong @NDRFHQ search & rescue team is en route to Nay Pyi Taw to aid in the rescue operations in Myanmar."
The earthquake, which impacted both Myanmar and neighboring Thailand on Friday, has caused significant destruction to buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure. Reports indicate that the death toll in Myanmar exceeds 1,000, with expectations of further increases as aftershocks continue to affect the region.
Previously, India has deployed NDRF teams for international assistance during the 2015 Nepal earthquake and the 2023 Turkey earthquake.
On Saturday, approximately 15 tonnes of relief supplies were sent to Yangon, Myanmar, via an Indian Air Force C130J military transport aircraft.
PM Modi expressed his concern regarding the devastating earthquake on Friday, assuring that India is prepared to provide all possible assistance to the affected nations.
