Key Takeaways
Dhaka, Jan 16 (NationPress) The interim government of Bangladesh, led by Muhammad Yunus, has appointed Omar bin Hadi, the sibling of the deceased Islamist leader Osman bin Hadi, to the position of Second Secretary at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission located in Birmingham, UK, on a three-year contract, as reported by local media on Friday.
The announcement was made through a notification signed by Abul Hayat Rafique, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Public Administration, according to Bangladesh's prominent daily, Dhaka Tribune.
As per the notification, Omar bin Hadi is prohibited from engaging in any other professional, business-related activities, or maintaining employment associations with any governmental, semi-governmental, or private institutions. Further specifics regarding the appointment will be detailed in a corresponding contract.
Osman Hadi, 32, was tragically shot in the head on December 12, as attackers fired from a moving motorcycle at the rickshaw he was traveling in on Paltan Road, Dhaka. Following the incident, he was airlifted to Singapore for urgent medical care but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries on December 18.
Hadi had gained notoriety as a spokesperson for Inqilab Moncho and was in the spotlight during the mass protests of July-August 2024, which culminated in the fall of the government under former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He was also a candidate for the parliamentary elections scheduled for February 12, recognized for promoting Islamist and anti-India sentiments within Bangladesh.
On December 23, Omar bin Hadi accused factions within the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government of being behind his brother's murder, aiming to disrupt the February 2026 elections, as reported by local media.
During a program organized by Inqilab Moncho outside the National Museum in Dhaka, Omar Hadi stated, "You are the ones responsible for Osman Hadi's death, and now you are trying to sabotage the election process by exploiting this situation."
Omar further emphasized that his brother advocated for the national elections to occur in February and urged Bangladeshi officials to maintain a conducive election atmosphere, as reported by Bangladesh's Daily Star.
"Prompt justice for the perpetrators is essential to preserve the electoral environment. The government has yet to demonstrate any tangible progress. If justice for Osman Hadi is not served, you too will find yourselves compelled to flee Bangladesh one day," Omar Hadi asserted.
Bangladesh has experienced a troubling surge in violence targeting minorities, media outlets, cultural entities, and diplomatic missions under the governance of Yunus.
