Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Dhaka, Feb 6 (NationPress) The interim government of Bangladesh, under the leadership of Muhammad Yunus, has opted to request an investigation by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights regarding the assassination of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.
This declaration was shared via a social media update by Shafiqul Alam, the Press Secretary for Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus.
This initiative follows a sit-in protest organized by Inqilab Moncho outside the Chief Advisor’s official residence, Jamuna, demanding a transparent inquiry overseen by the United Nations into Hadi's death.
The demonstration began on Thursday evening, featuring participation from Inqilab Mancha Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber, Hadi’s wife Fatima Tasnim Zuma, and a modest group of supporters, as reported by Bangladesh’s prominent daily, Dhaka Tribune.
During the gathering, Abdullah Al Jaber expressed that although the organization could have rallied more supporters, they chose to remain present alongside Hadi’s wife until they received a definitive commitment from the Chief Advisor. He emphasized that the group would not disperse from the protest without a complete assurance of justice.
In a statement made on social media amid the protest, Inquilab Moncho declared, “We are encircled by numerous police and additional forces, armed with batons. Our unequivocal stance: until Hadi’s assassination is subjected to a UN-led impartial inquiry, we will not move, even at the cost of our lives.”
Last month, Bangladeshi authorities described Hadi's assassination as a politically motivated murder, asserting that the conspiracy behind the attack was orchestrated in Singapore.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Detective Branch has submitted a chargesheet against 17 individuals linked to the case to a metropolitan court in Dhaka.
Hadi, aged 32, was the spokesperson for Inqilab Moncho and captured national attention during the mass protests from July to August 2024 that eventually resulted in the downfall of the Sheikh Hasina administration. He was also a parliamentary candidate for the elections taking place on February 12. Hadi was recognized for disseminating Islamist and anti-India sentiments within the South Asian region.
On December 12 of the previous year, Hadi was shot in the head when assailants on a moving motorcycle targeted the rickshaw he was in on Paltan Road in Dhaka. He was subsequently airlifted to Singapore for medical attention but tragically succumbed to his injuries on December 18, 2025.
