Eid Ceasefire Declared by Pakistan and Afghanistan Amid Rising Tensions
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kabul, March 19 (NationPress) In a significant development, Pakistan and Afghanistan have declared a temporary ceasefire to hostilities in celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr. This decision follows appeals from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Qatar, amidst ongoing tensions after Kabul accused Islamabad of a devastating attack that resulted in numerous casualties.
Pakistan’s Information Minister, Ataullah Tarar, shared the news via a post on X, shortly after reports surfaced of new strikes targeting alleged Taliban sites along the border. He stated, “Considering the forthcoming Islamic festival of Eid-ul-Fitr, and at the request of our brotherly nations,” Pakistan has opted for a temporary halt amidst the current Operation Ghazab-lil-Haq.
The ceasefire will span from “midnight March 18/19 to midnight March 23/24,” Tarar confirmed. Nonetheless, he warned that operations would resume immediately should there be any cross-border attacks, drone strikes, or terrorist actions within Pakistan.
Following this announcement, Afghan government spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid stated that Afghanistan’s security forces would also pause their defensive actions during Eid, responding to similar appeals from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Qatar. However, he made it clear that Afghanistan would not hesitate to retaliate if provoked, asserting that the country “will respond courageously to any form of aggression.”
This ceasefire follows accusations from the Taliban-led administration against Pakistan for a severe attack in Kabul. Deputy spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat claimed that the bombardment on Monday night targeted a drug rehabilitation center, leading to at least 400 deaths and approximately 250 injuries.
On Wednesday, Afghanistan conducted a mass funeral for the victims, drawing significant attention and condemnation. Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani condemned the strike as “a profoundly despicable act against humanity and Islamic principles,” according to Tolo News.
Despite the announced ceasefire, tensions persist, with both sides prepared to respond to any further escalations.
