Islamabad, March 6 (NationPress) A significant increase in terrorist activities and rising civilian casualties has elevated Pakistan to the second position in the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2025.
The recent GTI report, released by the Institute of Economics and Peace (IEP), assesses 163 countries globally, accounting for approximately 99.7 percent of the world's population. The GTI measures factors such as the frequency of terrorist incidents, casualties, injuries, and the overall impact of terrorism.
The findings indicate that the number of deaths linked to terrorism in Pakistan has been on a steady ascent over the past five years, with the most significant annual rise observed in the last decade. Notably, there was a substantial increase of 45 percent in terrorist attacks throughout the country in 2024.
The report states, "This trend is reflected in the surge of terror attacks, which more than doubled from 517 in 2023 to 1,099 in 2024. This marks the first instance where attacks have surpassed 1,000 since the inception of the index."
The outlawed militant group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has emerged as the fastest-growing and deadliest faction in the country for the second consecutive year, exhibiting at least a 90 percent rise in fatalities attributed to its actions.
In 2024, the TTP executed 482 attacks in Pakistan, leading to 585 deaths, representing an increase of at least 91 percent from the 293 fatalities recorded the previous year.
The report indicates, "TTP was responsible for 52 percent of all deaths in Pakistan in 2024. The surge in terrorism is closely linked to the Taliban's ascendance in Afghanistan. Groups based in Afghanistan have intensified their operations, especially along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) remain the hardest-hit areas, with these western frontier regions accounting for over 96 percent of terrorist incidents and fatalities in Pakistan during 2024."
