Islamabad, Feb 21 (NationPress) The establishment of a dedicated security unit in Pakistan to safeguard Chinese nationals is a clear indication of the country's acquiescence to Beijing's demands, effectively elevating the status of Chinese workers above the local populace, as reported by a prominent news source.

The report underscores that in a bid to maintain foreign investment amid persistent challenges from militancy, Pakistan is making substantial concessions to China.

“In early January 2026, Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi unveiled a new elite security unit specifically focused on ensuring the safety of Chinese individuals in the nation. This move comes in response to a series of relentless assaults by militant factions targeting Chinese citizens, workers, and infrastructure ventures,” detailed a report from 'The Diplomat'.

“By prioritizing Chinese interests, Pakistan is demonstrating its urgent need to retain its most significant benefactor. In turn, Beijing is leveraging Islamabad’s diminishing authority to bolster its presence in the region, rather than withdrawing as it had begun to do in the latter half of 2025,” the report added.

Since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in 2021, China has sought to assert its influence in the area, taking advantage of the reduced presence and influence of the US.

However, instead of reaping the anticipated rewards, Chinese interests have become targets for various militant groups, resulting in increased violence against Chinese workers.

“Pakistan has become the main battleground for a significant rise in attacks, particularly from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), which have specifically targeted Chinese infrastructure in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Recently, assaults against Chinese individuals, businesses, and citizens have also surged in neighboring Afghanistan and Tajikistan,” the report noted.

“Throughout this period, growing animosity towards China has emerged among various regional and transnational terrorist groups, despite their different strategic goals. In Afghanistan, the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) has claimed that their attacks against Chinese nationals are retaliatory measures for the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) perceived injustices against the Uyghur Muslim population in Xinjiang,” it mentioned.

The report also emphasized that Pakistan’s security vulnerabilities were laid bare following a coordinated and unprecedented assault by the BLA on January 31, which involved multiple suicide bombings and shootings that claimed the lives of numerous Pakistani law enforcement and military personnel in Balochistan.

“In this context, the CCP has repeatedly insisted that Pakistan permit the deployment of China’s armed security forces to protect its citizens, demonstrating a clear lack of faith in Pakistan’s ability to handle its internal security issues. Beijing has even suggested the permanent stationing of Chinese military personnel in the port city of Gwadar, although Islamabad has been reluctant to concede further sovereignty,” it concluded.

Point of View

It is essential to recognize the delicate balance Pakistan must maintain in its foreign relations, particularly with China. While the need for foreign investment is critical, the implications of prioritizing foreign interests over local welfare raise significant concerns about national integrity and security.
