Is the Indian diaspora our 'pride' as PM Modi claims in Trinidad and Tobago?

Port of Spain, July 4 (NationPress) Upon his arrival in Trinidad and Tobago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Indian community, praising them as 'Rashtradoot' and the 'Ambassadors of values and cultures'.

'We hold in high regard the strength and support of our diaspora. With more than 35 million individuals across the globe, the Indian diaspora is a source of pride for us. Each of you embodies the spirit of a Rashtradoot – an Ambassador of India's rich values, culture, and heritage,' the Prime Minister expressed.

He continued, 'Earlier this year, during the Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas in Bhubaneshwar, we had the honor of having Trinidad and Tobago's President Christine Carla Kangaloo ji as our Chief Guest. A few years prior, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar Ji graced us with her presence.'

'During the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, I unveiled several initiatives aimed at honoring and connecting with the Girmitiya community worldwide. We are working to document their history and foster connections for a brighter future. A comprehensive database of the Girmitiya community is under development, which includes tracing the villages and cities in India from which their ancestors migrated and studying the legacy of their forebears. We aim to regularly hold World Girmitiya Conferences, strengthening our historic ties with our brothers and sisters in Trinidad and Tobago.'

'I believe you all celebrated the joyous return of Ram Lalla to Ayodhya after 500 years. You graciously sent holy water and ‘Shila’ for the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. I also bring with me a piece of that devotion – a replica of Ram Mandir and some water from the sacred Saryu River,' Mr. Modi remarked.

Highlighting the connection of the sixth generation of the Indian diaspora in Trinidad and Tobago, Prime Minister Modi announced, 'OCI cards will be issued to the sixth generation of the Indian diaspora in Trinidad & Tobago. Your connection is not merely through blood or surnames; it’s one of belonging. India embraces you, and you are always welcome here.'

He also acknowledged that PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar's lineage traces back to the Buxar region in Bihar. 'Many consider her a daughter of Bihar. Bihar's heritage is a point of pride for India and the world. Bihar has paved the way in various fields for centuries, and new opportunities will continue to emerge from Bihar in the 21st century,' he added.

The Prime Minister expressed joy over the return of Ram Lalla to Ayodhya after 500 years, sharing the deep faith and devotion towards Lord Ram. 'We remember your contribution of holy water and Shilas for constructing the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.'

'I have also brought with me a replica of Ram Mandir and sacred water from the Sarayu River.'

'The Ram-Leelas in Sangre Grande and Dow Village are truly unique. As stated in Shri Ram Charit Manas, राम धामदा पुरी सुहावनि। लोक समस्त बिदित अति पावनि। This means the revered city of Prabhu Shri Ram is so beautiful that its glory is known worldwide. I trust you welcomed the return of Ram Lalla with immense joy.'

'Prabhu Shri Ram teaches that the glory of Ayodhya is derived from the sacred Sarayu. Those who bathe in its waters achieve eternal union with Shri Ram himself,' PM Modi noted.

'Earlier this year, the Maha Kumbh, the largest spiritual assembly in the world, took place. I carry water from the Maha Kumbh with me. I kindly request PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar ji to offer the holy waters of the Sarayu River and Maha Kumbh to the Ganga Dhara here. May these holy waters bless the people of Trinidad and Tobago.'

The Prime Minister recognized the story of the Indian community in Trinidad and Tobago as one of resilience. 'The challenges faced by your ancestors could have broken the strongest spirits, yet they confronted hardships with hope and persistence. They left the Ganga and Yamuna behind, but carried the Ramayan in their hearts. They may have departed from their land, but their soul remained. They were not just migrants; they were messengers of a timeless civilization. Their contributions have enriched this nation culturally, economically, and spiritually. Consider the impact you have all made on this beautiful land.'

'Our bond transcends geography and generations.' PM Modi observed.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged the significant achievements of notable individuals, stating, 'Kamla Persad-Bissessar Ji, as the first female Prime Minister of this country; Her Excellency Christine Carla Kangaloo Ji, as the female President; and the late Basdeo Pandey, who rose from humble beginnings to become a respected global leader. The achievements of eminent figures like math scholar Rudranath Capildeo, music icon Sundar Popo, cricket talent Darren Ganga, and Sewdass Sadhu, who dedicated his devotion to building the Temple in the Sea, are remarkable.'

'As the children of Girmitiyas, you are no longer defined by your struggles. You are defined by your achievements, your service, and your values. There must be something magical in the ‘doubles’ and ‘dal poori’—for you have multiplied the success of this great nation!' PM Modi declared during his address to the Indian community.

'When I visited 25 years ago, we marveled at Lara's cover drives and pull shots. Today, it is Sunil Narine and Nicholas Pooran who evoke the same excitement in our youth. Our friendship has grown even stronger since then.'

'Cities like Benaras, Patna, Kolkata, and Delhi are not just names in India; they are also street names here. Festivals like Navratra, Mahashivratri, and Janmasthmi are celebrated here with enthusiasm and pride. Traditional arts like Chowtal and Baithak Gana continue to thrive.

'I can feel the warmth of many familiar faces, and I see the eagerness of the younger generation to learn and grow together. Indeed, our connections extend far beyond geography and generations.'
