Seychelles serves as a significant maritime partner for India in the Indian Ocean, playing a vital role in India's Vision MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) and its commitment to the Global South, as noted in a statement by the MEA.
Following the Vice President of India's visit to Seychelles in October 2025, President Herminie's trip is expected to bolster the strong cooperation and vibrant people-to-people connections between the two nations.
Herminie was sworn in as the sixth President of Seychelles during a national ceremony at Unity Stadium in October 2025, which was attended by Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan as India's representative.
During his visit, Vice President Radhakrishnan and Herminie met at the State House in Victoria to explore avenues to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
The Vice President conveyed warm regards to President Herminie on behalf of the Government and people of India. Both leaders reaffirmed their collective vision for peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indian Ocean Region and the Global South, as per the Vice President's office.
Additionally, Radhakrishnan met Seychelles Vice President Sebastien Pillay at the State House to deliberate on various aspects of bilateral collaboration between the two nations.
The MEA noted that both leaders discussed the diverse India–Seychelles relationship, which is deeply rooted in shared heritage, culture, and mutual connections.
Diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles were established following Seychelles' independence in 1976. An Indian Naval Ship, INS Nilgiri, participated in the celebrations when Seychelles gained independence on June 29, 1976, as per the MEA.
The Indian Mission in Victoria was established in 1979, with the High Commissioner situated in Dar-es-Salaam and concurrently accredited to Seychelles.
The first resident High Commissioner was appointed in 1987, while Seychelles inaugurated its resident mission in New Delhi in 2008.
