Could South Korea's Lawmakers Revolutionize AI in Defence?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, Feb 2 (NationPress) Lawmakers from South Korea's ruling Democratic Party (DP) and the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) have introduced a new bill on Monday, designed to enhance the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in the research and development of the defence sector.
This legislation, co-sponsored by PPP Representative Yu Yong-weon and DP Representative Boo Seung-chan, along with 31 other legislators from these rival parties, acknowledges that AI technologies are becoming a vital component in the evolution of future defence strategies, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
Representative Yu emphasized in a press release, “This bill will create a foundational framework to organize defence AI as a crucial asset for national security, ensuring its stable application in military operations and sustainable growth.”
This proposed law is notable as the first effort to systematically govern AI within the defence sphere at the national level, aiming to oversee the entire lifecycle of defence AI from initial research and development to operational deployment and subsequent management.
Representative Boo remarked, “AI is a strategic resource essential for overall national security.” He noted that the significance of this bill lies in its provision of a foundational framework rather than merely regulating, establishing principles and accountability to facilitate stable military AI usage.
The proposal aims to tackle concerns regarding the responsible and sustainable deployment of defence AI, addressing the current exclusion of the defence sector from the existing AI framework.
Moreover, the bill proposes the establishment of a committee to discuss and formalize key policies related to defence AI, alongside the creation of a dedicated policy center and research institute.
According to the bill, the government will be mandated to devise and execute a comprehensive military AI plan every three years.
