Sri Lanka Establishes Four Committees to Combat Middle East Conflict Impact
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Colombo, March 17 (NationPress) The government of Sri Lanka has approved the formation of four specialized committees aimed at tackling the economic and social challenges resulting from the ongoing unrest in the Middle East. This decision follows a proposal put forth by the president.
Endorsed by the cabinet of ministers, the initiative seeks to maintain essential services, stabilize supply chains, and alleviate the repercussions of global uncertainties on everyday life, as they increasingly impact the nation's economy.
An energy-focused committee has been established to ensure a continuous supply of fuel, gas, and coal. Chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, this committee will manage urgent procurement efforts and explore alternative supply routes, including new international partners, to guarantee stable energy availability, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.
Simultaneously, a separate committee, led by the Prime Minister, is tasked with overseeing public services. Its role encompasses ensuring the efficient operation of government activities while fostering economic stability and maintaining the provision of essential services to citizens.
Additionally, another committee, directed by the Minister of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development, will be in charge of monitoring the distribution of vital goods. This group aims to ensure both public and private supply chains operate smoothly, keeping products accessible to consumers at reasonable costs and preventing market shortages.
To address the social implications of the crisis, a fourth committee, chaired by the Minister of Rural Development, Social Security, and Community Empowerment, has been formed to assess the effects on vulnerable populations. This team will collaborate with relevant organizations to provide timely assistance and tackle emerging challenges that affect daily living conditions.
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East began after US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, resulting in the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other high-ranking military officials. In retaliation, Iran initiated drone and missile strikes targeting the US, Israel, regional capitals, and allied forces in West Asia.
