India Establishes Daily Monitoring Committee for West Asia Trade Impact
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 3 (NationPress) The Indian government has established a dedicated inter-ministerial committee to monitor the rapidly evolving circumstances in West Asia, as announced by Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday.
This committee will convene daily to observe developments and evaluate how escalating tensions in the region may influence India's trade.
Exporters across the nation are expressing concerns that the intensifying conflict in West Asia, particularly after coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran, could hinder trade routes and business operations. Many are apprehensive that shipping and logistics could experience delays or increased costs should the situation deteriorate.
During a post-Budget webinar, Goyal emphasized that the government is vigilantly monitoring potential threats to shipping, logistics, exports, and even essential imports.
He further detailed that the newly formed committee comprises representatives from various ministries to enhance coordination and facilitate prompt decision-making if challenges arise.
The minister revealed that the committee held its inaugural meeting on Tuesday, where different ministries offered recommendations on mitigating potential risks and protecting India's trade interests. The government will act on these recommendations and continue to assess the situation on a daily basis.
"Today, a consultation meeting took place with all relevant ministries, key logistics, and trade facilitation partners to discuss the emerging geopolitical landscape and its possible repercussions on India's exports and imports," Goyal stated.
Goyal reassured businesses that the Commerce Ministry welcomes feedback from exporters and industry representatives. He highlighted that the government's primary objective is to minimize the impact of the West Asia crisis on India's trade.
"Under the guidance of PM Narendra Modi, the government remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering a stable and responsive trade environment for our traders and exporters, ensuring their interests are protected and operations continue seamlessly," Goyal remarked.
