Washington, March 5 (NationPress) Indian economist Krishnamurthy V. Subramanian has been honored with the University of Chicago’s Alumni Award for Professional Achievement, marking him as the first Indian economist to receive this accolade in the award’s 85-year history.

He held the position of Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India from 2018 to 2021 and subsequently served as India’s Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund.

This prestigious award places him alongside esteemed past recipients, including Nobel laureates and influential thinkers such as Paul Samuelson, Gary Becker, Claudia Goldin, Carl Sagan, and Philip Kotler.

The University acknowledged Subramanian’s significant contributions through India’s Economic Surveys during his government tenure, referring to these reports as “landmark” documents.

These surveys provided a robust intellectual framework for India’s self-reliance, emphasizing competitive markets, policy autonomy, and inclusive growth.

His early analysis of the economic impact of COVID-19 was also highlighted, where he identified the crisis as a supply-side disruption and articulated a vision for a V-shaped recovery, which helped to bolster confidence in India's economic resilience.

During his time as Chief Economic Adviser, Subramanian produced three Economic Surveys that explored topics such as economic reforms, public investment, and long-term growth strategies. These surveys were released during a period of profound uncertainty for global economies due to the pandemic.

Much of the impactful work recognized by this award was conducted in India, addressing the policy challenges facing large emerging economies.

Subramanian also played a vital role at the IMF, focusing on economic issues pertinent to South Asia and emerging markets. His tenure coincided with critical global discussions on supply chains, debt challenges in developing nations, and the future of globalization.

In response to this honor, Subramanian expressed, “Being part of this academic lineage is incredibly humbling. What makes this award meaningful is that it recognizes work done from India and for India. To follow in the footsteps of remarkable Indians who achieved greatness while based in India, such as C. V. Raman, Homi J. Bhabha, Vikram Sarabhai, and M. S. Swaminathan, is truly a privilege.”

Currently, Subramanian is a Professor of Finance at the Indian School of Business. He earned his PhD from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, and also holds a B.Tech from IIT Kanpur and an MBA from IIM Calcutta.

With this latest recognition, Subramanian has received distinguished alumnus honors from all three of his alma maters: IIT Kanpur, IIM Calcutta, and the University of Chicago.

India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing major economies globally, with policymakers focusing on structural reforms, digital public infrastructure, and supply-chain diversification to enhance growth.
