Sudanese Army Reports 45 Fatalities and 28 Injuries from RSF Shelling

Khartoum, Dec 13 (NationPress) At least 45 civilians lost their lives and 28 others sustained injuries due to artillery fire from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) targeting residential neighborhoods and displacement camps in western Sudan, according to a statement from the Sudanese army on Friday.

The command of the 6th Infantry Division of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) reported, "Neighborhoods and camps in El Fasher city experienced a significant massacre yesterday, resulting from intentional shelling by the rebel militia, leading to the deaths of 45 citizens, including women and children, while 28 others were injured and taken to health centers."

The artillery fire specifically targeted residential areas in the southern part of El Fasher, the Zamzam displacement camp south of the city, and the Abu Shouk camp to the north.

As of now, the RSF has not released any statements regarding the attacks.

Earlier on Wednesday, at least 15 individuals were reported dead and 64 others injured due to another artillery strike by the RSF on a displacement camp and a market located south of El Fasher, as stated by a local health official.

"So far, 15 people have died and 64 others have been injured, with the RSF militia's shelling on Zamzam camp and the livestock market continuing," noted Ibrahim Khatir, the director-general of North Darfur State's health ministry.

He further mentioned that the majority of those affected were women and children. The Coordination of Resistance Committees in El Fasher, a local NGO, confirmed in a statement that the RSF's assault on the market and the Zamzam camp resulted in more than 60 injuries and 15 fatalities, including women, children, and elderly individuals.

An eyewitness described the shelling that occurred at 6:00 a.m. local time on Wednesday as "the most violent" since the RSF initiated their siege on El Fasher on May 10.

"Around six shells landed in the densely populated Zamzam camp while four others struck the livestock market south of El Fasher," the eyewitness reported.

Since May 10, intense clashes have erupted in El Fasher, the capital city of North Darfur State, between the SAF and the RSF.

Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a devastating conflict between the SAF and the RSF, resulting in more than 27,000 deaths and displacing over 14 million people, as estimated by international organizations.
