Paramaribo, June 10 (NationPress) On Tuesday, Suriname welcomed its inaugural shipment of fruit processing machinery, financed through the $1 million grant aimed at supporting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), as announced by External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar.

"This initial shipment of fruit processing machinery, made possible by the $1mn SME grant announced by EAM S. Jaishankar, is now in Suriname. Once operational, this facility will significantly enhance the value addition of local agricultural products," stated the Embassy of India in Suriname on X.

During a meeting with Surinamese Foreign Minister Albert Ramdin at the India-Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) in Guyana on April 21, 2023, India pledged USD 1 million in grant assistance for SME initiatives.

As part of this grant, plans are underway to establish a passion fruit packaging unit in Suriname through the provision of machinery from India. The NABARD Consultancy Services (NABCONS), the project's implementation partner, conducted a feasibility study in July 2024, confirming the project's viability, leading to the machinery's shipment to Suriname.

Both nations have established diplomatic mechanisms to bolster their cooperation, including Ministerial-level Joint Commission Meetings and a Joint Working Group focused on agriculture. They have actively collaborated on development partnerships, with India providing Line of Credits (LOCs) and Grants-in-Aid.

Under its Social Welfare initiative, India has also granted food security assistance to Suriname valued at approximately US $10 million.

In June 2023, President of India Droupadi Murmu made her first foreign visit to Suriname, marking a pivotal moment in their bilateral relations. During her visit, she was honored as the State Guest at the 150th anniversary celebration of the arrival of Indians in Suriname and received the prestigious 'Grand Order of the Chain of the Yellow Star', the highest civilian honor in Suriname. Several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed during her visit, focusing on the regulation of medical products, the recognition of the Indian Pharmacopeia, and a Joint Work plan for Agriculture and Allied Sectors for 2023-2027.
