Tongan Prime Minister Resigns Prior to No-Confidence Vote

Suva, Dec 9 (NationPress) Tongan Prime Minister Hu'akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni announced his resignation on Monday morning, ahead of a scheduled no-confidence motion that was expected to be introduced in parliament later that day, as reported by local media.
In his speech to Parliament, he stated, “I will be resigning immediately according to the constitution,” according to Xinhua, referencing a report from the Matangi Tonga news website.
The intention to submit the no-confidence motion was formally presented to the speaker of the legislative assembly of Tonga on November 23.
In addition to his role as Prime Minister, Hu'akavameiliku also serves as the nation's Minister for Education.
