Vancouver, April 27 (NationPress) - A tragic event unfolded as nine individuals lost their lives and numerous others were injured when a vehicle surged into a gathering at the Lapu Lapu Filipino Festival in Vancouver, Canada, reported the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) on Sunday.

The authorities confirmed that a 30-year-old resident of Vancouver was apprehended after he drove a black SUV into the festival crowd at E. 41st Avenue and Fraser Street shortly after 8 p.m. on Saturday.

On their social media platform X, the police department stated, "Currently, we can confirm that nine individuals have died following a man’s reckless driving through a crowd at last night's Lapu Lapu Festival. Our heartfelt condolences go out to everyone affected by this heartbreaking incident."

In addition, the police announced, "A 24-hour support center has been established at the Douglas Park Community Centre, located at 801 West 22nd Avenue. Officers from the Vancouver Police and Victim Services professionals are available to assist anyone unable to reach a loved one who attended the Lapu Lapu Festival."

This incident occurred during the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party, an annual celebration honoring the first national hero of the Philippines.

The VPD has also confirmed that this tragic occurrence is not linked to any terrorist activities.

The Major Crime Section of the Vancouver Police Department is actively investigating the situation.

Earlier, the police had reported that multiple fatalities and injuries were caused when a driver plowed into the crowd at the street festival.

Meanwhile, disturbing videos circulating on social media depicted numerous victims on the ground, some appearing lifeless or severely injured.

Witnesses noted that victims were struck while either walking or waiting by food trucks along the street.

New Democratic MP Don Davies expressed his sorrow on X, stating, "I have just learned of the devastating news regarding the horrific incident at the Lapu Lapu Festival. My prayers are with all victims and their families."

Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim also expressed his deep sadness over the tragedy, stating, "I am both shocked and heartbroken by the dreadful event at today’s Lapu Lapu Day celebration... Our thoughts are with all impacted and with the Filipino community in Vancouver during this extremely challenging time."

A significant emergency response team is present at the location, and investigations are continuing. Reports indicate uncertainty over whether the crash was accidental or deliberate.

The Lapu Lapu Festival, organized at the intersection of E 43rd Avenue and Fraser Street, was meant to be a vibrant celebration of Filipino culture but has now transformed into a site of mourning and turmoil.
