Fatal Car Accident Claims Seven Lives in the Philippines

Manila, Dec 24 (NationPress) A devastating incident occurred in South Cotabato province, resulting in the loss of seven lives and leaving one person critically injured after a van collided with a roadside tree, as reported by a town official on Tuesday.

According to Emil Sumagaysay, the municipal disaster risk reduction and management officer of Tupi town, the tragic event transpired along a steep road shortly after 3 p.m. local time on Monday.

He explained that the van experienced a brake failure, which led to the vehicle crashing into a tree, claiming the lives of seven passengers on the spot - comprising four women, including two minors, and three men.

The victims were on a trip to explore the local tourist attractions when this unfortunate accident took place, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.

“The driver, who survived but is in critical condition, was ejected from the driver’s seat through the vehicle’s windshield,” Sumagaysay shared during a radio interview.

In a similar incident on December 17, a collision between a van and a pickup truck resulted in the deaths of four individuals and left 13 others injured in Misamis Oriental, located in the southern Philippines.

Authorities stated that the two vehicles crashed around noon, with the van losing control while navigating a downhill curve in Laguindingan town, veering into the oncoming lane and colliding with the pickup.

The accident led to the demise of three van passengers and one pickup truck passenger, according to police reports.

In response to this tragedy, an investigation was initiated to ascertain the cause of the fatal incident.

Earlier, on December 6, a multi-vehicle collision in the capital city resulted in four fatalities, with at least 25 others sustaining injuries.

Police officer Napoleon Cabigon informed reporters that this crash involved a truck, a bus, five cars, and 16 motorcycles. The victims included three men and one woman, with the accident causing significant traffic disruptions for hours.

Investigations revealed that the truck’s brakes had malfunctioned, leading to the driver losing control.

The Metro Manila Development Authority documented 32 road accident incidents in the capital from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on December 6 (Thursday) alone. Traffic accidents are frequent in Metro Manila, particularly during the busy Christmas season.
