Liverpool, May 27 (NationPress) At least 50 individuals sustained injuries, among them four children, after a vehicle drove into a large crowd of Liverpool supporters celebrating the club's Premier League title win in the city center.
Out of those injured, 27 have been hospitalized, with one child and one adult reported to be in serious condition.
The shocking event occurred on Water Street shortly after 6 p.m. on Monday, as the festivities were coming to a close. Videos shared on social media depict the car speeding through the crowd, momentarily veering slightly away from the most densely packed areas.
Witnesses recounted how the car initially stopped after hitting some victims, only for the driver to accelerate again, striking dozens more.
One eyewitness, Rashid, remarked, "People rushed toward the car and began smashing its windows, but the driver continued to flee."
The vehicle eventually halted, surrounded by an angry group of fans. Police had to step in to protect the driver and restore order at the scene.
The driver, a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area, was apprehended at the scene.
Authorities confirmed that he is believed to be the only person responsible, and no additional individuals are being sought in connection with the incident. Investigators have also dismissed terrorism as a motive.
Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Jenny Sims stated, "At just after 6 p.m., as the parade was concluding, we received reports of a car colliding with several pedestrians on Water Street in Liverpool's city center. Several individuals were injured and transported to the hospital. Additionally, many people of varying ages were treated on-site but did not require hospitalization."
Sims encouraged the public to refrain from speculation or spreading misinformation, asserting, "Extensive inquiries are ongoing to ascertain the circumstances leading up to the collision, and it is crucial that people avoid speculation or misinformation on social media. I can assure you that we consider this an isolated incident, and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it."
"This incident is not being treated as terrorism at this time," he added.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the occurrence, labeling the scenes as appalling and extending his thoughts to those injured or affected.
"The scenes in Liverpool are appalling -- my thoughts are with all those injured or affected," Starmer expressed in a post on X.
"I want to extend my gratitude to the police and emergency services for their prompt and ongoing response to this distressing incident. I am receiving updates on developments and urge that we provide the police with the space they need to conduct their investigation," he concluded.
