Trump Reveals US is Deep in Talks with Iran Amid Ceasefire Efforts
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jerusalem, April 6 (NationPress) US President Donald Trump revealed to Israeli media that the United States is currently involved in intensive negotiations with Iran aimed at achieving a ceasefire, emphasizing that Washington will not abandon the conflict midway.
Trump indicated that his administration is in contact with Iran through various channels, primarily led by advisors Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Sources familiar with the discussions explained that communication is taking place along two lines: indirect channels facilitated by Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey, as well as direct dialogues involving US envoys and Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi.
The mediating countries are striving to assist both parties in finding a consensus that could enable an extension of the US-imposed deadline. However, the sources noted that recent communications have not produced significant advancements.
Trump mentioned in an interview with Channel 12 that there is a "good chance" of reaching an agreement before the upcoming deadline on Tuesday, but cautioned that failure to do so would lead the United States to undertake strong measures in the region.
On social media, the US president shared a message stating, "Tuesday, 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time!" which seems to indicate a potential extension for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier on Sunday, Trump warned that Tuesday would be "Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one" for Iran, reiterating his call for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
In a separate interview with The Wall Street Journal, Trump threatened to dismantle all of Iran's power plants if the nation's leaders do not agree to reopen the strait by Tuesday evening.
"If they don't comply, and insist on keeping it closed, they will lose every power plant and every other facility in the entire country," Trump stated.
In a telephone interview with Fox, Trump expressed optimism that a resolution to the conflict in Iran could be achieved by Monday.
