Washington, April 16 (NationPress) A senior Pentagon official characterized US President Donald Trump's defense strategy as not a recipe for isolation but rather a common sense approach, amid ongoing concerns regarding the possible effects of Trump's America First policy on US alliances and partnerships.

New Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby made these comments in a social media post shortly after being sworn in by Vice President J.D. Vance last Wednesday, taking on an essential role in shaping America's defense strategy.

"This isn't a recipe for isolation. Instead, it's the common-sense approach. If we had continued on the old path, disaster would have been the result," Colby expressed on X, referring to Trump's defense policy.

"That is why President Trump's approach is so vital. His is a strategy that prioritizes Americans' interests and aims to restore peace through strength -- not just for a few years, but for decades to come," he continued.

Trump has consistently emphasized his America First policy, which many anticipated might aim to reduce the United States' overseas military engagements while pressuring allies and partners to take on greater security responsibilities -- leading some to label it a form of isolationism.

Last Tuesday, the Senate confirmed Colby for the Pentagon's No. 3 position, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

Colby has advocated for a shift in the role of US Forces Korea (USFK) to concentrate more on threats from China.

In an interview with Yonhap News Agency last year, he highlighted the necessity for a USFK overhaul to make it "more relevant" to addressing China-related contingencies instead of being "hostage" to countering North Korean threats.

Colby previously served as deputy assistant secretary of defense for strategy and force development from 2017-2018 during the first Trump administration.
