Washington, April 8 (NationPress) A newly declared two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, as announced by President Donald Trump, has sparked divergent reactions across the political landscape in the United States. Some legislators are advocating for diplomacy, while others are expressing concerns about potential escalation and inadequate oversight.

As per the announcement, both Washington and Tehran have consented to halt hostilities, collaborate on a 10-point proposal, and facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which is a vital corridor for global energy.

Congressman Morgan Griffith, a Republican, praised the ceasefire, attributing it to the military pressure that has compelled negotiations.

“President Trump deserves recognition for achieving a ceasefire agreement with Iran. The formidable efforts of the US armed forces have significantly weakened Iran, bringing them to the negotiation table,” he stated.

Griffith emphasized a significant goal for the US, stating: “I support dialogues that ensure Iran never acquires nuclear capabilities.”

He also expressed a somber sentiment, saying, “I am also praying for the Americans who sacrificed their lives for our country and for their families. Their service deserves commendation.”

Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick from Pennsylvania described the ceasefire as a prudent yet necessary measure.

“Diplomacy should always be the goal. The reported temporary ceasefire is a positive step towards that aim, and we will remain vigilant about the evolving situation,” he remarked.

“Any action that safeguards American lives and creates opportunities for substantial peace negotiations is the correct approach, although caution is still necessary.”

Fitzpatrick, however, reiterated his ongoing concerns regarding Iran, asserting: “There can be no uncertainty about the threat posed by this regime or what is at stake: they must never be permitted to obtain a nuclear weapon or the means to deliver one.”

He stressed the importance of oversight, stating that Congress must ensure “strict congressional oversight as the situation evolves.”

Senator Lindsey Graham expressed cautious support for diplomatic efforts but cautioned against jumping to conclusions.

“As I have mentioned previously, I prefer diplomacy, provided it leads to favorable outcomes concerning the Iranian terrorist regime. I appreciate the diligent efforts of all those seeking a diplomatic resolution,” he stated.

“At this preliminary stage, I am extremely cautious about distinguishing fact from fiction or misrepresentation… In simple terms, we need to verify the facts.”

However, swift criticism emerged from both political parties.

Congressman Frank Mrvan from Indiana accused the administration of acting without sound justification.

“The President’s unilateral actions in Iran are misguided, and his reckless rhetoric is exacerbating an already dire situation,” he remarked.

“While I acknowledge the Administration’s announcement of a ceasefire, the reality is that there was no imminent threat, no clear objectives, no endpoint in sight, and our servicemen continue to face danger.”

Mrvan added that Americans are already “feeling the impact at the gas pump and grocery store.”

Congressman Kevin Kiley from California raised broader issues regarding US actions and congressional authority.

“The United States does not destroy civilizations, nor do we threaten to do so as a negotiating tactic,” he asserted, emphasizing that “Congress has a responsibility to oversee ongoing military operations.”

Senator Lisa Murkowski criticized the president’s rhetoric, cautioning that it “cannot be dismissed as merely an effort to gain leverage in negotiations with Iran.”

“This kind of rhetoric is an affront to the values our nation has sought to uphold globally for nearly 250 years,” she remarked, adding that it “endangers Americans both abroad and at home.”

Senator Ruben Gallego from Arizona echoed this concern, stating that the US military “is the best in the world not just for its strength but because we adhere to the law and protect civilians.”

“Trump’s threats to annihilate ‘an entire civilization’ undermine everything we stand for and are fundamentally illegal,” he asserted.

The ceasefire emerges amidst escalating tensions in the Gulf region, where the Strait of Hormuz remains a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments. Disruptions in this area have immediate repercussions for global energy markets, including countries like India, which is heavily reliant on crude imports from the region.
