Trump Criticizes Spain and UK in Meeting with German Chancellor Merz
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Washington, March 3 (NationPress) In a meeting aimed at illustrating Transatlantic solidarity, US President Donald Trump delivered a stark criticism of two significant European partners, labeling Spain and the United Kingdom as "very, very uncooperative." He expressed concerns regarding NATO funding, military accessibility, immigration policies, and energy strategies.
"Spain has been very, very uncooperative. And so has the UK," Trump remarked during the Oval Office gathering with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
"This is not the age of Churchill," he stated.
Trump pointed out that Spain has been reluctant to increase its defense contributions.
"Every European nation, at my request, paid 5%," he noted.
"And Spain didn't do it."
He mentioned that Madrid had curtailed US military access.
"Spain actually said that we can't use their bases," he added.
Trump intensified his rhetoric, claiming, "I instructed (Treasury Secretary) Scott Bessent to sever all ties with Spain," and stressed, "I could, as of tomorrow, halt all business dealings related to Spain."
Merz aimed to contextualize the disagreement within NATO commitments.
"We are attempting to persuade Spain to align with the 3% or 3.5% spending goal we agreed upon in NATO," the German Chancellor explained, outlining a framework of "3.5% for military and an additional 1.5% for our military infrastructure."
Turning his attention to the UK, Trump described it as "that foolish island they once leased for a century," complicating US military logistics.
Despite expressing affection for the country, he criticized its current trajectory.
"The UK, what they're doing with energy and immigration is terrible," he said.
He urged Britain to boost its fossil fuel production, stating, "You have the North Sea," and urged, "Open up the North Sea."
Trump criticized wind energy, asserting, "They’ve got windmills everywhere ruining the country."
He expanded his critique to encompass Europe as a whole.
"It's not just the UK; other parts of the European Union face similar issues regarding immigration and energy," Trump stated.
He also targeted London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan, calling him "a terrible Mayor of London, incompetent...."
