Tehran, May 7 (NationPress) The Iranian Foreign Ministry has dismissed the claims made by the UK Home Office and certain British lawmakers following the detention of several Iranian citizens on terrorism charges, according to reports from state media on Wednesday.
The arrests occurred during a series of operations carried out by British Police across various locations in the United Kingdom.
Alireza Yousefi, who serves as the Director General for the Western Europe department at Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed concerns about the “negative consequences” stemming from these “unfounded allegations”. He urged London to promptly disclose the legal grounds for the detention of these Iranian nationals and to facilitate consular visits without delay, as reported by the official news agency IRNA.
Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi indicated that Iran is prepared to assist the UK in its investigation regarding the seven Iranian nationals arrested under allegations of “terrorism” if credible misconduct is demonstrated.
“It is troubling to learn that Iranian individuals have reportedly been apprehended by UK security services. Should credible allegations of misconduct arise, Iran is ready to assist in the investigations. We urge the UK to uphold our citizens' rights and provide them with due process,” Araghchi stated on X.
The UK's counter-terrorism police detained eight men, including seven Iranian nationals, during multiple raids across the country, as confirmed by the Metropolitan Police on Sunday.
Authorities stated that five individuals—four of whom are Iranian nationals—were arrested on Saturday on suspicion of terrorism-related offenses connected to an alleged plot targeting specific locations.
The arrests took place in Swindon, west London, Stockport, Rochdale, and Manchester. The identity of the fifth suspect remains unconfirmed, but reports indicate that he was subsequently released on bail with strict conditions.
In a separate operation on the same day, three additional Iranian nationals were detained in London as part of another counter-terrorism investigation, according to a separate statement from the Metropolitan Police.
Meanwhile, during a session in the House of Commons on Tuesday, Britain’s Minister for Security Dan Jarvis described the arrests as among the most significant counter-state threats and counter-terrorism actions seen in recent history.
“What follows is an extremely intricate series of investigations, involving numerous officers conducting forensic searches, gathering critical evidence from multiple sites, and securing witness statements, all supported by ongoing efforts from our security and intelligence agencies,” he emphasized.
“At this stage in the operations and investigations, it would be inappropriate for me to speculate or comment further on the details of these cases and the motivations behind the threats posed. Let me clarify: anyone in the UK employed by the Iranian state must declare it or risk committing a serious criminal offense. We will also pursue the criminal networks and enablers that Iran utilizes to fulfill its objectives,” the minister added.
Since 2022, British authorities have successfully thwarted over 20 such plots and have imposed sanctions on a criminal network based in Sweden alleged to have connections to Iran. This group has been accused of targeting Israeli and Jewish interests across Europe.
