UN Opposes Any Breach of Syria's Territorial Integrity: Official

The United Nations, on December 11 (NationPress), firmly opposes any infringement on the territorial integrity of Syria, according to a UN spokesperson. This statement follows Israel's appropriation of a buffer zone in the Golan Heights after the downfall of Bashar al-Assad's regime.

In response to inquiries regarding recent media reports indicating that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) targeted 320 military installations in Syria, Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, stated during a daily press briefing, "It is evident that we oppose any infringement on the territorial integrity of Syria. We reject such attacks."

After the collapse of al-Assad's administration, Israel intensified its military actions in Syria, conducting airstrikes on military assets and taking control of a demilitarized buffer zone in the Golan Heights, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

Dujarric reiterated that the United Nations regards the Golan Heights as an occupied region of Syria. "We have clearly articulated our stance regarding the breach of the disengagement agreement following the IDF's occupation of the buffer zone," he added.

"This signifies a pivotal moment for Syria. Its neighbors should not exploit this situation to encroach upon Syrian territory," the spokesperson emphasized.

He urged that this period should be utilized by all regional and international actors to support the Syrian populace, allowing them to determine their future and to pursue a transition that is Syrian-led, Syrian-owned, and inclusive.

Geir Pedersen, the special envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Syria, called on Israel to halt its military actions in Syria on Tuesday, stressing the critical necessity to end all conflicts in the Middle East.

"A very concerning trend is the ongoing Israeli movements and bombings within Syrian territory," Pedersen remarked. "This needs to cease."
