Houston, July 2 (NationPress) The Trump administration has suspended a portion of military assistance to Ukraine after a comprehensive assessment of US military stockpiles, as confirmed by both the White House and the Pentagon.
"This choice was made to prioritize America's interests following a thorough evaluation of our nation's military support to various countries worldwide," stated White House representative Anna Kelly.
This action was prompted by worries that US military stockpiles had become alarmingly low, according to multiple reports from US media outlets citing informed sources.
Last month, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a memorandum mandating a review of the US munitions stockpile after three years of assistance to Ukraine, along with recent military strikes against the Houthi group in Yemen and Iran, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
The assessment revealed that certain weapon stocks that had been previously promised were now insufficient, according to media outlets.
Elbridge Colby, the Defense Department's Undersecretary for Policy, stated that the Pentagon will continue to provide the President with comprehensive options to sustain military support for Ukraine, in alignment with his aim to bring this tragic conflict to a close.
"Simultaneously, the department is diligently reviewing and modifying its strategy to achieve this goal while ensuring the readiness of US forces for national defense priorities," Colby added in a statement.
Following a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the NATO summit in The Hague last week, US President Donald Trump informed reporters that Ukraine is keen to acquire the Patriot air defense missiles from the United States.
"They are interested in obtaining the anti-missile systems, known as the Patriots," Trump remarked. "We will see if we can make some available. We also need them."
"We are supplying them to Israel, and they have proven to be exceptionally effective, 100 percent effective. It's hard to believe how effective they are. They want these more than anything else," he emphasized.
Some analysts suggest that this may indicate a potential decrease in aid to Ukraine from the Trump administration. Hegseth notably missed a recent meeting of an international coalition focused on coordinating military assistance to Ukraine, marking the first time the US Defence Secretary was absent.
Since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in February 2022, the United States has supplied over $66 billion in weapons and military support to Ukraine, as per a recent report.
