Venezuela's Nationwide Campaign Against US Sanctions Gains Momentum
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Caracas, April 21 (NationPress) A significant nationwide effort against US sanctions is ongoing in Venezuela, spearheaded by National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez. He is leading a rally that emphasizes the importance of political and social unity.
"We must bring an end to the sanctions," Rodriguez stated during the rally at Cerro El Gallo in San Felix, which took place on Monday (local time). He highlighted that the initiative is aimed at fostering consensus and advocating for the removal of economic sanctions, encouraging Venezuelans to set aside their differences and concentrate on mutual goals.
This mobilization is part of a national rally initiated on April 19 by acting President Delcy Rodriguez, with activities occurring in various states, including Zulia, Tachira, and Amazonas, according to reports from Xinhua.
During the launch in Zulia state, Delcy Rodriguez remarked that Venezuela must prevail over US sanctions, noting that millions of children born during nearly a decade of economic restrictions have been deprived of essential social and economic opportunities.
The campaign features marches and public gatherings throughout the nation, culminating in Caracas on May 1.
In a recent development, last month, the United States lifted sanctions imposed on Venezuela's acting President Delcy Rodriguez.
The US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control announced Rodriguez's removal from its sanctions list, although details regarding the decision were not disclosed.
Rodriguez took to X, a social media platform, to express her approval of this move as a promising step towards normalizing and strengthening bilateral relations. She expressed optimism that further sanctions on Venezuela could be removed to facilitate economic development and collaboration.
Previously, Rodriguez held the position of vice president under President Nicolas Maduro and faced US sanctions in 2018 as part of actions targeting his administration.
On January 3, US military forces conducted a substantial operation against Venezuela, forcibly detaining Maduro and his wife and transporting them to New York. Following this event, Rodriguez took on the role of acting president, and Washington has since interacted with her government.
The relationship between the US and Venezuela has been historically tense. However, in recent months, the United States has relaxed some restrictions, particularly in the energy sector. Venezuela possesses some of the world's largest proven oil reserves, maintaining its significance in the global energy market.
Additionally, on Monday, the US Embassy in Caracas resumed its operations after a seven-year closure.
