Dhaka, May 1 (NationPress) The former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, emphasized the current struggles faced by various sectors and professions in the nation, notably workers and farmers. She pointed out that the working class has descended into a severe crisis following the unlawful takeover by anti-state conspirators on August 5 of the previous year.

In her message to all ‘working and toiling individuals’ in Bangladesh and around the globe on May Day, Hasina stated that no group has suffered more than the workers and farmers — the very individuals whose labor and dedication contributed to a self-sufficient and flourishing Bangladesh.

“As part of this conspiracy, numerous factories have been shut down, various industries vandalized and reduced to ruins. Millions have found themselves without jobs. Escalating unemployment and intolerable price increases have rendered life unbearable for workers. Even during Eid, many did not receive their rightful wages or bonuses. When they advocate for their rights, they are met with violence from the private militias of the illegitimate usurpers. A tragic number of workers and farmers have been driven to despair,” remarked the former PM.

She asserted that the Awami League, representing the oppressed since its establishment, has continuously fought to enhance the lives and secure the rights of workers, adhering to the principles set forth by the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. She also highlighted that the Awami League government has ensured the protection of female workers through maternity leave and measures against sexual harassment.

“Each time the Awami League has been in power, it has strived to improve workers' lives, following Bangabandhu's vision. The Bangladesh Workers Welfare Foundation was created to offer financial assistance in cases of workplace incidents, permanent disabilities or fatalities, treatment for serious illnesses, and the higher education of workers' children. A central fund was also established to support the welfare of workers in the export-oriented garment sector. Salaries and benefits have been increased across all industries,” she stated.

Hasina reiterated that due to the dedicated efforts of the Awami League government, Bangladesh has bolstered its partnership with the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

Reflecting on the contributions of workers during Bangladesh's fight for independence and the Liberation War, Hasina noted that a historic relationship has been forged between the Awami League and the working class. She expressed her conviction that, just as in the past, workers and farmers will continue to be a fundamental force in the Awami League's efforts to remove the ‘illegal occupiers’ and restore the ‘vision’ of Bangladesh.

“Our workers embody a proud legacy of bravery, solidarity, and a quest for justice. May Day remains a source of inspiration in this ongoing battle. On this significant day, I extend my deepest admiration to all the workers of Bangladesh. Through our united efforts, we will overcome the darkness. Together, we will revive the golden era of prosperity once more,” concluded Hasina.
