190 Illegal Bangladeshi Immigrants Detained in West Bengal's Nadia District Over the Past Year; 52 in Recent 45 Days

Kolkata, Dec 23 (NationPress) A total of 190 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants were apprehended in the Indo-Bangladesh border district of Nadia in West Bengal over the past year, according to the records maintained by the state police.

Furthermore, from these 190 individuals, approximately 52 were arrested in the last 45 days, coinciding with the height of the political turmoil in neighboring Bangladesh, which has seen ongoing attacks on minority Hindus and religious establishments.

According to sources familiar with the situation, all of these individuals crossed into India by exploiting the porous and unfenced borders in certain areas of the district, subsequently settling in India and attempting to procure fake Indian identity documents through local agents.

An insider from the state police indicated that the 190 individuals apprehended were only those who had begun residing in the border-adjacent villages of Nadia district after entering illegally.

“It is highly likely that many of those who crossed into Nadia might have relocated to other districts later on. If that is the case, the actual number of illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators entering Indian territory through the porous borders of Nadia district could be significantly higher,” he remarked.

West Bengal Police and Kolkata Police have been alerted to numerous rackets operating within the state that facilitate the issuance of fake Indian passports for illegal Bangladeshi residents, with the majority of these activities originating from Nadia district.

Recently, a former associate of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Selim Matabbar, was apprehended in a hotel located in the Park Street area of central Kolkata, along with a counterfeit Indian passport.

Investigations revealed that he obtained this fake Indian passport through a racket operating out of Nadia district. Matabbar, who was arrested on November 30, had secured employment at the same hotel using his fake passport.

On that same day, the Nadia district police arrested four illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators: Sumi Akhtar, Iman Biswas, Shankar Biswas, and Rupkumar Biswas, in the Mazdia area under the Krishnaganj Police station in Nadia.
