Shimla, Aug 6 (NationPress) In a significant rescue operation, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), successfully evacuated 413 stranded pilgrims from the Kinnaur Kailash trek route in Himachal Pradesh after two temporary bridges on the path were washed away due to severe rain and cloudbursts.
The region experienced heavy rainfall, which triggered cloudbursts, leading to the collapse of a bridge over the Tangling drain on Wednesday morning, leaving numerous tourists and pilgrims stranded on this remote trekking route.
In a prompt response, a rescue team from the ITBP's 17th Battalion executed the evacuation using a rope-based traverse crossing technique, successfully relocating all 413 individuals to safer locations.
According to a statement from the ITBP, "The rescue operation is being conducted by 1 Gazetted Officer, 4 Subordinate Officers, and 29 Other Ranks of ITBP, in conjunction with a team of 14 NDRF personnel."
After receiving a distress call from the Kinnaur District Administration about additional individuals being stranded, ITBP and NDRF teams were rapidly redeployed to the scene. Ongoing rescue operations are confirmed by officials.
To support this mission, ITBP provided specialized mountaineering and Rope Rescue and Climbing (RRC) equipment, including high-altitude climbing gear such as mountaineering boots, ice axes, ropes, crampons, harnesses, and crevasse rescue tools necessary for navigating challenging terrain and glaciers.
Visuals shared by the ITBP on X depicted dramatic moments of the rescue, showcasing pilgrims ziplining across rivers using the rope traverse method and being safely escorted away from perilous areas.
The footage also illustrated officials closely coordinating in difficult terrain to oversee the operation.
The ITBP confirmed its commitment to providing all possible assistance in close collaboration with the local district administration and other support agencies.
Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh continues to face the repercussions of this year’s monsoon devastation. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) reported that the state has witnessed 194 deaths and incurred a total loss of Rs 1.85 lakh crore between June 20 and August 5 this year due to severe rains, landslides, and related disasters.
