Kolkata, Mar 14 (NationPress) Five individuals, including three children, tragically lost their lives and eight others sustained severe injuries in a devastating road incident in Chapra, located in West Bengal's Nadia district, on Friday. This occurred while the entire state was engulfed in the festivities of the Holi celebration, also known as Dolyatra.

Reports indicate that the calamity transpired when a Toto, a larger battery-operated version of an e-rickshaw, packed with passengers, had a head-on collision with a speeding four-wheeled vehicle.

A district police spokesperson revealed that the Toto's passengers hailed from nearby Nakashipara and had traveled to Chapra on Friday morning to purchase items for the upcoming Eid festival.

“As they were returning to Nakashipara in the same Toto, it collided head-on with the four-wheeler. The force of the collision was so intense that three children died instantly,” the official stated.

The crash occurred near a petrol station on the Krishnanagar-Karimpur state highway.

According to eyewitnesses, local residents initiated rescue efforts before being joined by personnel from the Chapra police station.

“Initially, the bodies of the three children were retrieved, and by that time, they were already deceased. Ten others, including some critically injured, were transported to Chapra Rural Hospital. Subsequently, we learned that two out of the ten had succumbed to their injuries in the hospital,” recounted a local resident who participated in the rescue.

He noted that the four-wheeled vehicle was traveling at an unusually high speed, which intensified the impact of the crash.

Meanwhile, a district police official mentioned that due to insufficient facilities at Chapra Rural Hospital for handling such critical cases, the injured individuals were transferred to the nearby Shaktinagar District Hospital.
