Kolkata, Sep 27 (NationPress) In a heartbreaking event, three individuals lost their lives and three others sustained serious injuries when a vehicle they were in collided with a stack of bricks in West Bengal's Hooghly district, according to police reports from Saturday.

The tragic accident occurred at Anantapur in Hooghly district on Friday night. The victims were on their way to collect Durga idols for their community puja in the Polba-Dadpur block.

Reports indicate that residents from Shankarbati village in Polba had traveled to Patuapara in Chandannagar to fetch the idols. While the truck delivering the idols arrived safely at the village, the four-wheeler trailing it did not reach. The vehicle carried six people, including the driver. A member of the puja committee recounted that due to the delay, they contacted someone in the car only to learn that it had met with an accident. Following the incident, members of the Puja Committee quickly arrived at the scene and later proceeded to Chandannagar Subdistrict Hospital.

According to a senior police officer from Hooghly district, "The four-wheeler struck a pile of bricks on the roadside while descending from the Chandannagar rail over bridge around midnight on Friday. Two victims died instantly, while four others sustained significant injuries and were taken to Chinsurah Imambara Hospital. One succumbed to injuries there. Another was transferred to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata, while two others are currently receiving treatment at Chinsurah."

The deceased have been identified as Bhaskar Devdhara (29) from Aankarbati, Pritam Chakraborty (30), and Swapan De (40), both from Surerpukur in Chandannagar. The Chandannagar police were the first to respond to the scene, followed by officers from the Polba police station.

A local eyewitness stated, "The car was speeding and crashed into the stack of bricks. Liquor bottles were discovered inside the car, indicating they might have been drinking, leading the driver to lose control."

The autopsy of the deceased is scheduled to take place at Chinsurah Imambara Hospital on Saturday.
