Agartala/Imphal/Shillong, Jan 21 (NationPress) On Tuesday, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Manipur celebrated their 53rd Statehood Day with a range of vibrant cultural events and functions. Given the ongoing circumstances stemming from over 20 months of ethnic unrest, the celebrations in Manipur were relatively subdued. Governors and Chief Ministers from various northeastern states expressed their hopes for enduring peace, unity, and progress in the conflict-affected Manipur.
The trio of states organized numerous activities to commemorate the occasion and introduced an array of welfare initiatives aimed at future development. President Droupadi Murmu, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President and Union Minister J. P. Nadda, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath extended their greetings to the citizens of these three states.
In addition, several Union ministers, Governors, Chief Ministers from neighboring northeastern regions, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also conveyed their best wishes to the people.
In Tripura, the main celebration took place in Agartala, where Chief Minister Manik Saha addressed attendees at the renowned Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan.
Meghalaya’s Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma remarked during the event: “Today, we celebrate 53 glorious years of Meghalaya - a land of unmatched beauty, rich culture, and resilient spirit.” He added: “As we honour our journey, let's continue striving for progress and unity, cherishing the dreams of our people. Happy Meghalaya Day to every proud soul of this incredible state!”
Manipur’s Chief Minister N. Biren Singh marked the occasion by addressing the primary function at the first battalion Manipur Rifles Ground in Imphal.
The former princely states of Tripura and Manipur became part of the Indian Union in October 1949 and were granted full statehood on January 21, 1972. Meanwhile, Meghalaya transitioned from being a part of Assam to achieving its own statehood on the same day. All three northeastern states attained full statehood under the North Eastern Region (Re-Organisation) Act, 1971.
