Shillong, Jan 21 (NationPress) Meghalaya commemorated its 54th Statehood Day on Tuesday, with the official festivities taking place at Baghmara in the South Garo Hills district for the first time. This move is interpreted as a significant declaration of the government's dedication to equitable and inclusive growth throughout the State.
The event paid homage to the pioneering figure of Meghalaya, the late Captain Williamson A. Sangma, the inaugural Chief Minister of the State, whose birthplace hosted the celebrations.
In attendance were Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, and Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, along with other prominent officials.
During his address, CM Sangma remarked that the establishment of Meghalaya was born from divine grace, collective prayers, and the steadfast determination of its citizens. He honored the leaders who led the Statehood movement through peaceful and persistent advocacy, reminiscing about how various tribes and communities united with a common vision.
Highlighting the rising divisions in modern society, particularly on social media, the Chief Minister expressed that negativity and animosity threaten the values upon which Meghalaya was founded. He urged citizens to honor the sacrifices and principles of the State’s founders and strive for unity and mutual respect. The Chief Minister mentioned receiving a personal letter from the Prime Minister extending warm greetings and best wishes to Meghalaya’s populace on Meghalaya Day. The Prime Minister fondly remembered the late P.A. Sangma and acknowledged his significant contributions to both the State and the nation.
Regarding development, Sangma noted that Meghalaya has achieved an average growth rate of approximately 10 percent over the past three years, positioning it among the fastest-growing States in India. However, he emphasized that growth metrics alone do not define success; genuine development must resonate in the daily lives of the populace.
Referring to the CM-Connect initiative, Sangma asserted that mindset plays a pivotal role in governance. He stated, “If we decide in advance that something cannot be accomplished, we have already failed,” emphasizing the necessity for districts to have clear plans, targets, and a shared vision to effectively contribute to the State’s holistic growth.
In his key announcements for the region, the Chief Minister indicated that the second phase of the Baghmara water supply project, costing Rs 140 crore, has been approved, marking a significant advancement for South Garo Hills. He also committed to addressing road connectivity issues and pledged to enhance the Baghmara Civil Hospital with improved facilities, hygiene, equipment, and skilled personnel.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong described the celebration as historic, noting that it was perhaps his first time witnessing a State-level Statehood Day event in Baghmara. Recognizing that South Garo Hills has often been viewed as one of the most underdeveloped districts, he stated that the government is diligently working to facilitate last-mile development through enhanced connectivity and infrastructure.
The program included cultural performances, the presentation of Meghalaya Day Awards and Governor’s Police Medals, a screening of a video titled Rise Meghalaya, and concluded with the National Anthem, showcasing the State’s rich heritage, unity, and aspirations for the future.
