Karnataka road accident kills 6 in Karwar; PM Modi expresses grief
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, 9 July expressed deep grief over the deaths of six people in a head-on road collision in Karwar, Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka. The crash, which occurred in the Arabail Ghat section of Yellapura taluk, left four others critically injured and prompted the Prime Minister to offer his condolences to the bereaved families.
What the Prime Minister Said
'The tragic accident in Karwar, Uttara Kannada district, has caused deep anguish. My heartfelt condolences are with the bereaved families during this difficult time. I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured,' Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a statement.
How the Accident Unfolded
The collision took place on Thursday morning when a Cruiser carrying the group rammed head-on into a truck near Balagar on the Arabail Ghat stretch. The truck was travelling from Yellapura towards Ankola when it struck the oncoming vehicle. According to police, the force of the impact was so severe that the passenger vehicle was completely mangled, killing six occupants on the spot.
The victims were all residents of Dharwad and had set out on Wednesday night for a tour to Dharmasthala and Chikkamagaluru. The group, including the driver, reportedly worked as part-time delivery executives for an online food ordering and delivery company.
The Deceased and the Injured
The six victims have been identified as Basavaraj (48), Abhisheik Eshwar (28), Akshay Mallannanvar (26), Abhishek Mallesh Mudabavi (26), Sanjeeva, and Sanjaya Angadi (30) — all friends travelling together.
The four injured — Shivaraj Durgappa Madival, Manjunath Ashok Chulaki, Sachin, and Channabasayya Basalingaiah Sampagaon — were rescued by local residents and rushed to a nearby hospital. All four are currently undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and their condition is stated to be critical.
Police Response and Investigation
Yellapura police rushed to the site, shifted the bodies for post-mortem examination, and informed the families of the deceased. A case has been registered and an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident. Police have cautioned that the death toll may rise, given the critical condition of the four hospitalised survivors.
This comes amid persistent concerns over road safety on ghat roads in coastal Karnataka, where sharp curves and heavy truck traffic have historically made stretches like the Arabail Ghat prone to fatal accidents. As investigators work to establish the precise sequence of events, attention will turn to whether regulatory compliance — on vehicle fitness and driver fatigue — was observed by either side.
