Six friends killed in head-on truck collision at Karwar's Arabail Ghat
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Six friends from Dharwad were killed and four others left in critical condition after a Cruiser collided head-on with a truck at Balagar in the Arabail Ghat section of Yellapura taluk, Karwar district, Karnataka, on Thursday, 9 July. The group, which included the driver, was travelling to Dharmasthala and Chikkamagaluru on a leisure trip when the fatal crash occurred.
How the Accident Unfolded
According to police, the truck was travelling from Yellapura towards Ankola when it rammed into the Cruiser near Balagar. The force of the head-on impact was so severe that the passenger vehicle was completely mangled, killing six occupants on the spot. The group had departed from Dharwad on Wednesday night for the tour.

The deceased have been identified as Basavaraj (48), Abhisheik Eshwar (28), Akshay Mallannanvar (26), Abhishek Mallesh Mudabavi (26), Sanjeeva, and Sanjaya Angadi (30). All were residents of Dharwad and reportedly worked as part-time delivery executives for Swiggy.

All four are currently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and their condition remains critical, according to hospital officials.
Police Response and Investigation
Yellapura police rushed to the scene, recovered the bodies, and dispatched them for post-mortem examination. Families of the deceased have been notified. A case has been registered and an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the collision, police confirmed.
A Pattern of Fatal Road Accidents in Karnataka
This crash is the latest in a series of deadly road accidents across Karnataka. On 13 February, seven people — including six school and college students — were killed in a multi-vehicle accident near Hoskote on the outskirts of Bengaluru. Among the dead was a motorcycle rider identified as Gagan, 26, who was returning home after a night shift at a private company.
Just a day before the Karwar tragedy, on 8 July, a three-year-old boy identified as Iza Adil was killed and his 25-year-old mother Shaheeba was critically injured when their two-wheeler struck a goods auto near the MRPL petrol bunk on Attibele-Sarjapur Road at around 10:45 am. The back-to-back tragedies have intensified concerns about road safety conditions on Karnataka's ghat and highway stretches.
Authorities are expected to review safety measures on the Arabail Ghat section, which has seen multiple accidents in recent years due to its sharp curves and heavy commercial vehicle traffic.
