Three killed as car overturns on NH-4 in Dharwad, Karnataka
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Three people were killed and three others seriously injured after a car overturned on National Highway 4 near Venkatapur village in Dharwad taluk, Karnataka, in the early hours of Tuesday, 1 September. The deceased, all residents of Davangere district, had reportedly travelled to Dharwad for catering work.
Who Died and Who Was Injured
The three fatalities have been identified as K.U. Vinayak, 25; Manjunath, 29; and Basavaraja, 34 — all from Davangere district. Three other occupants, including the driver Basavanagowda, sustained serious injuries and were shifted to Dharwad District Hospital for treatment.
How the Accident Unfolded
According to preliminary information, the group had finished their catering assignment and stopped for dinner at a dhaba on the outskirts of Dharwad before heading back. The accident occurred at around 2.30 am when a lorry reportedly appeared suddenly in the car's path on the highway. The driver applied the brakes abruptly in an attempt to avoid a collision. The vehicle allegedly lost control, rammed into the road divider at high speed, and overturned. Three occupants died on the spot.
Police Response and Investigation
Officials from the jurisdictional Garag police station reached the scene shortly after and launched an investigation into the circumstances of the crash. The exact cause — including whether speed, road conditions, or the lorry's positioning contributed — is under examination, according to reports.
A Troubling Pattern on Karnataka Roads
This incident adds to a grim series of road fatalities across Karnataka in recent days. On 28 August, at least four people — including a three-year-old girl — were killed and five others seriously injured when two cars collided near Godekere Gate in Chikkanayakanahalli taluk, Tumakuru district. The deceased in that crash were identified as Anil, 32, and Vivek, 31, from Chikkanayakanahalli, and Davud Pasha and his daughter Anaam, 3, from Turuvekere. A Kia car travelling from Turuvekere collided head-on with a Volkswagen coming from the opposite direction; both vehicles were badly damaged.
Separately, two people were killed in road accidents in north Bengaluru on Monday. R.A. Babu, 68, a resident of Kaval Bairasandra, died after a garbage truck struck his motorcycle near Goraguntepalya at around 9.30 am. In a second incident, Mahesh, 38, a vendor from Goraguntepalya, was killed when his motorcycle crashed into a parked lorry on the Peenya flyover at around 3.30 am. Mahesh had been en route to Dasanapura market, where he sold lemons.
The cluster of fatal crashes underscores persistent concerns about highway safety and night-time driving conditions on Karnataka's national and state road network. Authorities have yet to announce any specific safety measures in response to the recent spike in fatalities.
