The unfortunate incident resulted in at least 10 fatalities and left 15 others injured when a truck transporting them and vegetables overturned on National Highway 63 near the Gullapura Ghatta area in Yallapura taluk of Karwar district.

The injured individuals were taken to the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in Hubballi.

The deceased were from Savanur village in the Haveri district. They were all vegetable vendors who traveled to the village market weekly. When the truck flipped, the vegetables loaded on it fell on them, leading to their demise.

Karwar SP M. Narayana reported, "A total of 28 people were on the truck loaded with fruits and vegetables. By the time rescuers managed to extract victims from under the produce, nine had already died from suffocation, with another individual later succumbing to injuries at the hospital."

"The accident occurred due to dense fog. While attempting to yield to an oncoming vehicle, the truck collided with an electric pole and overturned. The victims were seated atop the fruits and vegetables," the SP added.

Local BJP MLA Shivaram Hebbar visited the hospital to check on the injured and instructed local authorities to expedite the return of the deceased's remains to their families.
