Indian Government Mandates 60% Seat Allocation on Flights at No Cost for Passengers
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 18 (NationPress) To promote a more convenient air travel experience, the Ministry of Civil Aviation announced on Wednesday that a minimum of 60 percent of seats on every flight must be made available at no cost to guarantee equitable access for all passengers.
In new guidelines issued via the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the ministry aims to bolster passenger convenience, transparency, and standardize practices among airlines. It emphasized that passengers sharing the same PNR should be seated together—ideally in adjacent seats.
“The transportation of sports gear and musical instruments will be supported in a clear and passenger-friendly manner, in accordance with existing safety and operational guidelines. Airlines are required to establish straightforward and transparent policies for transporting pets,” the ministry stated.
Additional directives from the ministry include strict compliance with the passenger rights framework, particularly concerning delays, cancellations, and denied boarding; a clear presentation of passenger rights on airline websites, mobile apps, booking platforms, and at airport counters; and effective communication of passenger rights in regional languages to promote broader accessibility and understanding.
India has become the third-largest domestic aviation market worldwide, with air travel increasingly becoming accessible and inclusive under the UDAN initiative. Currently, Indian airports service over 500,000 passengers daily, showcasing the rapid growth of the industry.
“Facilitating passenger experience is the utmost priority of the Ministry of Civil Aviation. In line with this commitment, the Ministry has launched several passenger-centric initiatives to ease travel, such as UDAN Yatri Cafes for affordable meals, Flybrary for free access to literature, and complimentary Wi-Fi at airports,” the official announcement noted.
The Ministry reaffirms its commitment to improving passenger experiences, ensuring transparency, minimizing grievances, and maintaining the highest safety standards within the aviation sector.
