Srinagar, May 7 (NationPress) Seven civilians tragically lost their lives and 38 others sustained injuries on Wednesday due to relentless mortar shelling by the Pakistan Army along the Line of Control (LoC). In response, Lt Governor Manoj Sinha has ordered the evacuation of civilians from vulnerable locations to safer areas.
The L-G stated on X, "I have assessed the situation in the border districts of J&K UT with senior administrative, police, and district officials including DCs of border districts. I am closely monitoring the circumstances, and the government is thoroughly prepared to address any eventuality. I have also instructed the DCs to facilitate the relocation of villagers from at-risk zones to secure locations while ensuring their boarding, lodging, food, medical care, and transportation. The safety of every citizen is our priority."
Among the deceased were a woman and two children, all of whom were casualties of the Pakistan Army's artillery and mortar strikes on various forward villages in Jammu and Kashmir, as reported by officials.
The Indian Army has reacted to the shelling with equal force, in light of recent ceasefire violations by Pakistani forces that followed India's missile strikes on nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
All seven fatalities occurred in the severely affected Poonch district, where another 25 individuals were reported injured. Meanwhile, ten people were injured in the Uri sector of Baramulla district, with three additional injuries reported in Rajouri district.
This escalation followed ‘Operation Sindoor’ strikes targeting terrorist infrastructure at nine locations in Muridke, Bahawalpur, Kotli, and Muzaffarabad within Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
The shelling originated in the Uri and Kupwara sectors of the Valley, extending to Poonch and Rajouri in the Jammu division.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Defence, the Indian troops are effectively countering Pakistan's ceasefire violations. The missile strikes on terror infrastructure commenced around 1:44 a.m. today, targeting nine locations simultaneously.
The Defence Ministry clarified that no military targets were attacked during these strikes, which were executed without breaching Pakistani airspace.
As a precautionary measure, all civilian flights from Srinagar airport have been suspended for the day. Schools, colleges, and other educational institutions have also been closed in three districts of the Valley and five districts of the Jammu division.
