Srinagar, May 17 (NationPress) - The Lt Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, visited regions impacted by Pakistan's shelling near the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district on Saturday. The Lt Governor's office stated on X, "I visited the border area in the Tangdhar Sector and evaluated the destruction caused by unprovoked heavy shelling from Pakistan. The administration has conducted an assessment, and immediate aid has been delivered. A few individuals still require rehabilitation."
"However, I believe this support is insufficient. I have instructed the Divisional Commissioner and senior officials to devise a thorough plan so we can approach the Government of India for proper rehabilitation," the Lt Governor's office added.
Manoj Sinha emphasized that following this comprehensive plan, the Jammu and Kashmir government will seek assistance from the Centre to rehabilitate the remaining affected individuals.
During his visit to Tangdhar, the Lt Governor engaged with members of impacted families to gain insight into their hardships.
Significant damage to both private and public properties occurred due to Pakistani mortar shelling targeting civilian facilities along the LoC in Poonch, Rajouri, Baramulla, and Kupwara districts.
In addition to displacing hundreds of residents, over 200 homes and shops were obliterated due to the shelling.
Residents living along the border abandoned their homes, livestock, and agricultural lands, fleeing for their lives as shells rained down on their properties from across the border.
On May 10, India and Pakistan reached a ceasefire understanding following a conversation between the DGMOs of both nations via hotline.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that both the Indus Water Treaty and trade with Pakistan would remain suspended.
PM Modi also mentioned that the only discussions feasible with Pakistan would pertain to terrorism and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh asserted that India will uphold the ceasefire understanding only if Pakistan refrains from facilitating any terror activities against India from its territory.
